Etymology

[edit]

Contraction of de (of/from) +‎ lequel (which).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /dy.kɛl/
  • Audio:(file)

Pronoun

[edit]

duquel m (feminine de laquelle, masculine plural desquels, feminine plural desquelles) (relative)

  1. of which, of whom, from which, from whom
    Voilà l’homme à côté duquel Marc s’asseyait.
There is the man next to whom Marc was sitting.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Duquel is used with compound prepositions ending in de, such as à côté de, près de, en faveur de (as above).
  • Duquel can also replace the possessive dont (whose). This is overall rare, but it is necessary when the noun phrase is preceded by any preposition: l'homme avec la femme duquel j'ai parlé (the man with whose wife I've spoken).
