Or from Old Galician-Portuguese dereita, feminine form of dereito, from Latin dīrectus (straight), from dīrigō (lay straight; direct; distribute), from dis- + regō (to rule, govern), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ-. Compare Spanish derecha, Catalan dreta, French droite, Italian dritta, Romanian dreapta.
