[edit]From Middle French diguer, dicquier, dieguer, from Old French dikier, from Middle Dutch diken, dijcken, from Old Dutch *dīkon, from Proto-West Germanic *dīkōn (“to dig, ditch, dam”); cognate with Old English dīcian (“to dam, dig”). More at English dig.
