[edit]From a Vulgar Latin derivative of Late Latin ieiūnāre, from Latin ieiūnus, with the initial Latin ie- probably changing to de- and later di- in Italian. Compare English dine, Catalan dejunar, Spanish desayunar, French déjeuner, Occitan dejunar, Portuguese desjejuar, Old Italian giunare.
