[edit]Compound of deviasi (“deviation”) + standar (“standard”), calque of Dutch standaarddeviatie (“standard deviation”), from English standard deviation. Coined by English mathematician Karl Pearson in 1894 in his paper "On the dissection of asymmetrical frequency curves".
