Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Arabic ضَيِّق (ḍayyiq). The expected form would be *dajjaq due to the originally emphatic ḍ (compare tajjeb). This influence was either levelled out in Maltese or the underlying form was a dissimilated variant dayyiq, ḏayyiq, which exists in several Arabic dialects.
Adjective
[edit]dejjaq (feminine singular dejqa, plural dejqin or dojoq, comparative idjaq)
Etymology 2
[edit]From a merger of Arabic ضَيَّقَ (ḍayyaqa) and ضايَقَ (ḍāyaqa), both from etymology 1.
Verb
[edit]dejjaq (imperfect jdejjaq, past participle mdejjaq)
