Pronunciation

Etymology 1

[edit]

From French daman, from Arabic دَمَان إِسْرَائِيل (damān ʔisrāʔīl).

Noun

[edit]

damão m (plural damões)

  1. hyrax (mammal of the order Hyracoidea)
    Synonyms: hirax, hírax
Usage notes
[edit]
  • The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always masculine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “damão macho” for male, and “damão fêmea” for female. Here, fêmea is treated as an undeclinable noun and don't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to fêmeo if so.
