  1. (dialectal) accusative plural masculine of dails

Lithuanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From a Baltic root dail-, cognate with Latvian daiļš (refined, beautiful), with further origin uncertain. Derksen derives it from Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂-l-, an extension of *deyh₂- (to shine); for this etymology, see dìdelis (big) for more potential cognates. Alternatively, Derksen notes a potential connection with Proto-Slavic *dě̀lo (deed, work); perhaps this was confused with the root mentioned above.[1] Smoczynski's derivation from the o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (to cut, split),[2] is rejected by Derksen.
