[edit]From Old Norse dýpð, from Proto-Germanic *diupiþō, cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐌾𐌿𐍀𐌹𐌸𐌰 (djupiþa) and English depth. Related to the Icelandic djúpur (“deep”).
