[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Low German dörnitze, from Polabian dvarnai̯ćă (“chamber”), probably derived from Proto-Slavic *dvьrь (“door”) or *dvorъ (“court”). Cognate with modern Low German Dörnse, Dönse. The word is also attested in eastern dialects of Middle High German as dürnitz, türnitz, possibly from a Sorbian cognate (or otherwise from the Low German).
