Etymology 1

[edit]

Inherited from Latin corōna, from Ancient Greek κορώνη (korṓnē). Doublet of coroană, which was a borrowing.

The unexpected /r/ to /n/ phonetical evolution is due to a hypercorrection to the rhotacisms which existed in some dialects of Old Romanian.
