  • The term approaches being a sum of parts, constituent + country. It is most often used in reference to the countries within the U.K., Denmark, and Netherlands. It was used in reference to the republics of the former Yugoslavia and to those of the Soviet Union. It is sometimes used in reference to the member states of the European Union. It is usually not used in reference to U.S. states.
