Late Latin borrowing from Ancient Greek κολαφίζω (kolaphízō, I slap, buffett), from κόλαφος (kólaphos, a slap) (whence Classical colaphus) from κόνδυλος (kóndulos, knuckle) (whence Classical condylus).
