Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from a Germanic language (compare Middle High German kleinōt, Middle Low German klênö̂de), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *klainiz (“shining, splendid”) + a Germanic suffix corresponding to Old High German -ōti.
Alternatively, the second element may possibly represent Old High German ōt, from Proto-West Germanic *aud (“wealth, riches, possession”).
