claiming race (plural claiming races)

  1. (horse racing) A race in which the competing horse can be claimed by anyone at the specified claiming price for the race.
    Synonym: claimer
    • 1968, Marvin B. Scott, The Racing Game, page 15:
In a claiming race, each horse is in a sense up for sale. That is, any owner who has raced a horse at the track during the meet in progress may put in a claim to buy any horse racing in a claiming race.
