From Proto-Celtic *klārom (plank, board, table) (compare Proto-Brythonic *klọr), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂ro- (plank) (compare Ancient Greek κλῆρος (klêros, lot, piece of wood for casting lots)), probably from *kelh₂- (to cut down).
