Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese celorgião (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from *chirurgianus, a Vulgar Latin derivative of Latin chīrurgia (surgery), from chīrurgus (surgeon), from Ancient Greek χειρουργία (kheirourgía), from χείρ (kheír, hand) + ἔργον (érgon, work). Cognate with Portuguese cirurgião.
