Borrowed from Latin encyclopaedia, from Ancient Greek ἐγκύκλιος παιδεία (enkúklios paideía, the circle of arts and sciences, curriculum), from ἐγκύκλιος (enkúklios, circular, rounded, round), from κύκλος (kúklos, circle) + παιδεία (paideía, the rearing of a child, education), from παιδίον (paidíon, child).
