From Proto-Eastern Algonquian *čīkkahīkan, from Proto-Algonquian *či·katahikani (broom). Equivalent to chíikham (to sweep) +‎ -íikan. Cognate with Unami chikhikàn (broom), Abenaki chighigan (broom), Penobscot čikkáhikan (broom).
