chest rub (plural chest rubs)

  1. (emergency medicine) A form of applying pain to the sternum of the patient wherein the responder applies strong pressure with the knuckles in an attempt to establish the patient's level of consciousness.
  2. (medicine, pharmacology) A topical medication applied to the chest in the hope of alleviating the symptoms of a cold.
