Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic чашникъ (čašnikŭ), from Proto-Slavic *čašnikъ, from *čaša (cup) + *-nikъ (forms agents). Compare Czech číšník (waiter), Polish cześnik (cupbearer), Russian чашник (čašnik, cupbearer).
