[edit]Borrowed from Latin [Īnsula] Canāria (“Canary Islands”); īnsula (“island”) + canāria (“of the dogs”), from canis (“dog”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ. The bird is named after its original which included the Canary Islands.
