Borrowed from French canal, from Old French canal, from Latin canālis (channel; canal), from canna (reed, cane), from Ancient Greek κάννα (kánna, reed), from Akkadian 𒄀 (qanû, reed), from Sumerian 𒄀𒈾 (gi.na). Doublet of cainéal channel.
