Etymology 2

[edit]

From Late Latin camīnāta, derived from Latin camīnus (fireplace). From the latter came the Italian camino~cammino (fireplace, chimney), which shows the same /m/~/mm/ variation. This variation may have resulted from contamination with the unrelated cammino (path) and its derivative camminata (a walk).
