[edit]From Vulgar Latin cathégra (attested in Pompeiian inscriptions), variant of Latin cathedra (“seat”), from Ancient Greek κᾰθέδρᾱ (kathédrā, “chair of a teacher, throne”), from κᾰτᾰ́ (katá, “down”) + ἕδρᾱ (hédrā, “seat”). Compare Piedmontese cadrega, Romansch chadregia, Ladin cariega, and Venetan carega.
