Etymology

An onomatopoeia, related to cicëroj and cirlë.[1] In view of variant cërllë (with -rn- assimilation), Orel suggests a South Slavic origin; compare Serbo-Croatian crnilo (blackness; ink), Macedonian црнило (crnilo, blackness).[2]
