[edit]From Old Irish céile (“servant, bondsman, vassal, subject; liege, vassal; fellow, companion; husband, wife”), from Primitive Irish ᚉᚓᚂᚔ (celi, “follower, devotee (genitive)”), from Proto-Celtic *keiliyos.
