Romanian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *caballānus, diminutive of Latin caballus, or from carnalis. Compare also Spanish carnero. Scriban (1939) proposes Transylvanian Saxon jêrlänk, which is cognate to German Jährling and English yearling. Other theories include a Slavic *kъrdlanъ or a pre-Roman substratum word.
