[edit]Etymology
[edit]Equivalent to Maghrebi Arabic بُوقال (būqāl), Sicilian bucali, Ancient Greek βαύκαλις (baúkalis), a wanderwort that seems to have been borrowed back and forth throughout the Mediterranean, though it is eventually thought to be of North African origin. The Maltese plural proves Sicilian influence, but the word as such may well have been inherited from Arabic.
