bromeosin (countable and uncountable, plural bromeosins)

  1. A fluorescent dye produced by the reaction of bromine with fluorescein.
    • 1887, Journal of the Society of Dyers and Colourists - Volumes 3-5, page 45:
      Bromeosin is nitrated in an enamelled pan placed in a water-bath.
    • 1889, Alfred Henry Allen, Commercial Organic Analysis:
      With potash solution, bromeosin gives in the cold an orange-red solution, which on boiling becomes purple-red, violet, and pure blue, with a strong green fluorescence.
    • 1896, Bertram Blount, A. G. Bloxam, Chemistry of manufacturing processes, page 431:
      Bromine is chiefly used for the production of bromeosins (q.v.) and for the manufacture of bromides.
