From bringe-, related to Old Norse brum (tree buds) and Proto-West Germanic *brām, and bær. Attested in Danish text of Gerhard Schøning in his description of Norwegian countryside (1774), spelled as brambær, from dialectal northern form brambær (similar to northern Swedish brambär).
