[edit]From brem (“broom (plant)”) + raap (“turnip”), a meronymical name deriving from the plant grote bremraap (“Orobanche rapum-genistae”), which parasitizes on broom plants. Compare the Latin name of the latter species (rapum meaning "turnip" and genista meaning "broom") and English broomrape.
