[edit]From Early Scots bowsum (“obedient, compliant”) (circa 1375), from Northern Middle English buȝsom, from early Middle English buhsum (cf. buxom), from Old English būgan (“to bend”), from Proto-Germanic *beuganą, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰūgʰ- (“to bend”). Equivalent to bow + -some.
