[edit]From Middle Low German borgemester, equivalent to borger + mester. Compare with Danish borgmester and German Bürgermeister.

Usage notes
[edit]The title is no longer used in a Norwegian context, ordfører has replaced it, but it is still used when referring to mayors in other countries.
