Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From boos (“evil”) + wicht (“living being”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]booswicht m (plural booswichten, diminutive booswichtje n)
Usage notes
[edit]In Dutch, compound words normally always take the gender of the latter component of the compound. In this case, the latter component is wicht, a neuter word, which would render the compound neuter. However, due to the word being almost always used to refer to a male person, it takes the masculine gender.
Descendants
[edit]- Afrikaans: booswig
