[edit]From Middle High German bōzeln, iterative of bōzen (“to hit, strike; to play skittles”), from Old High German bōzan, from Proto-Germanic *bautaną (“to strike”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewd-. Cognate with English beat, which see.
