English

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Hebrew בלי נדר (without a vow).

Adverb

[edit]

bli neder (not comparable)

  1. A qualification of an undertaking to do something, such that the commitment does not include the strength of a vow.
I will do this bli neder.

Usage notes

[edit]

In Jewish law, a vow has serious and weighty consequences (Numbers 30). Qualifying a commitment to perform a certain action with the term bli neder exempts the speaker from the violation of a vow in the event that he does not fulfill his commitment.
