[edit]Either from the verb blestema or from a Vulgar Latin root *blastemium, from blasphemium, from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin blasphemia. Compare Italian bestemmia, Old French blastenge, Old Occitan blastenh, Aromanian blãstem. Compare also blasfemie, a possible doublet.
