Etymology

From Proto-Somaloid *biče.[1] Only found in Lowland East Cushitic from *bikee, perhaps from an unattested Southern Nilotic language (Compare Nandi beek (water)),[2] whence also Arbore biče, Baiso beke and Oromo bishaan. False cognates include Burunge ma'ay and Iraqw ma'ay from Proto-Afroasiatic *maʔ-.
