- In contrast to targeted approaches that profile a small number of known metabolites, untargeted approaches (without restriction to particular compounds) have the advantage of allowing for identification of metabolic fingerprints (that is, multiple biomarkers that form a biopattern) associated with particular endophenotypes [ 5, 6 ].
