Usage notes

[edit]
  • Higher numerals (those above þúsund (thousand)) are treated as nouns, assuming the grammatical case required by the syntactic context and governing an associated noun in the genitive plural. Those ending in -jón such as milljón (million) and billjón (trillion) are feminine, while those ending in -arður such as milljarður (billion) and billjarður (quadrillion) are masculine. (Unlike in English, Icelandic uses the long scale for large numerals.) Multiples that involve the numbers 1 through 4 or numbers ending in 1 through 4 must have the corresponding numeral declined in the appropriate gender and case. Hence "twenty-two million men" inflects as tuttugu og tvær milljónir manna (nominative and accusative), tuttugu og tveimur milljónum manna (dative) and tuttugu og tveggja milljóna manna (genitive). (In these examples, milljón (million) is feminine plural and is inflected for case; tuttugu og tveir (twenty-two) likewise inflects for case in the feminine; while maður (man) assumes the genitive plural form manna in all cases.)
