[edit]Etymology
[edit]Attested since 1418. From Old French billard (“rod, staff”), diminutive of Old French bille (“log, tree trunk”), probably ultimately from Proto-Celtic *belyos (“tree”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (“blossom, flower”). Doublet of billar and billarda.
