From a medieval form bitulario, from *bitulo + -eiro, a suffix which forms tree names. From a substrate form *betŭlo-, *bitŭlo-, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *betu- (birch), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet- (resin, pitch).[1][2]
