[edit]From a medieval form bitulario, from *bitulo + -eiro, a suffix which forms tree names. From a substrate form *betŭlo-, *bitŭlo-, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *betu- (“birch”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet- (“resin, pitch”).[1][2]
