Etymology

From Old Swedish besværia, from Middle Low German besweren. Equivalent to be- +‎ svärja. Cognate with Danish besværge, Norwegian Bokmål besverge, Dutch bezweren and German beschwören.[1]

  1. to beg, to ask (someone), to adjure
    Jag besvär dig vid den levande Guden, att du säger oss om du är Messias, Guds Son.

  2. (occult) to enchant, to send a spell or curse on (someone)
