Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tai *biːᴮ (older sibling).[1] Northern Tai dialects have the tone C such as Zhuang beix [peiꟲ²] due to contamination from Proto-Tai *nwoːŋꟲ (younger sibling).[2]

In Northern Tai, cognate with Bouyei bix.

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Thai พี่ (pîi), Northern Thai ᨻᩦ᩵, Lao ພີ່ (phī), ᦗᦲᧈ (pii¹), Shan ပီႈ (pīi), Ahom 𑜆𑜣 ().
