[edit]From Middle High German befürhten, bevürhten, from Old High German biforhten, bifurihtōn, biforhtōn, biforahtōn, from Proto-West Germanic *bifurhtijan, *bifurhtōn, equivalent to be- + fürchten. Cognate with Middle Low German bevrüchten, English befright.
