[edit]From Middle High German bedrücken, from Old High German bidrukken, from Proto-West Germanic *biþrukkijan. Doublet of bedrücken. The usage of the umlaut-less Upper German variant as technical term for (im)printing established in the 17th century. Equivalent to be- + drucken.
