[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle English bedene, bidene, of uncertain origin. Believed to be a formation of bid-, alteration (perhaps through conflation with Middle English mid (“with”) or with) of bi (“by”) + ene (“once”), from Old English ǣne (“once, at once”), related to Old English ān (“one”), equivalent to be- + one.
