[edit]From beàrn (“notch”) + -an + Brìde (“Saint Brigid”), referring to the flower first blooming around the holiday of Là Fhéill Brìde (“Saint Brigid's Day”), celebrated on February 1st.
Alternatively, from brìgh (“sap, juice”).
