[edit]From Vulgar Latin *barrum (“clay, mud”), from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia, possibly Celtic; compare Middle Irish broch (“waste, dregs”) and Gaulish *barros (“the bushy end”).
Cognate with Portuguese barro, Galician barro and Spanish barro.
